Hydration Beyond Water: Light, Skin, and the Living Intelligence of the Human Body
By Julia Wallis : February 2026
Hydration is far more than the amount of water we drink or apply to our skin. It is a dynamic, intelligent process that involves water, light, energy, and timing – all working together to support health at the cellular level. Understanding hydration through this wider lens reveals just how profoundly they influence our skin, nervous system, immune function, healing capacity, and overall vitality.
Hydration and the Skin: Lessons From Electrolysis
During the treatment using Electrolysis (permanent hair removal), adequate hydration is essential. An energy must conduct efficiently via a probe into the hair follicle for all modalities – thermolysis, galvanic, and blend – to work safely and effectively. When the skin is dehydrated, either systemically or topically, treatments become more challenging. Client comfort decreases, practitioner precision is compromised, and skin healing can be delayed. Clients tried drinking more and quickly needed to urinate, or not drink much to avoid disrupting treatment time by frequent use of the toilet.
Our skin – the body’s largest organ – relies on a healthy microbiome as its first line of defence. Repeated use of alcohol-based cleansers strips this microbiome, dehydrates tissue, and weakens barrier function. Through my clinical work, I observed these sub-optimal effects repeatedly and felt compelled to understand why – and more importantly, how to do better, my clients and our industry deserve this.
Initially, I began reapplying a natural skin toner after using alcohol-based cleansers prior to treatment. But this raised an important question:
Why strip the skin and microbiome in the first place?
In 2017, after extensive troubleshooting with Emma Young, I introduced Hydrating Skin Treatment Preparation. This work later evolved into the launch of Julia Wallis Natural Skincare in 2020. Alongside this professional journey, my own experience of ill health deepened my understanding of hydration as a foundational principle – not just for skin, but for all aspects of human health. That curiosity ultimately led me into the field of quantum biology, opening a new perspective on our health, disease, overall wellness and life in general, the study bridging quantum physics, biology and spirit.
Water as Information, Structure, and Consciousness
Water is everywhere – around us, within us, and at the very foundation of life. In the human body, water is far more than a passive substance. It is information, structure, and living intelligence. Around 99% of our body are water molecules, yet its role in health, energy, and disease is profoundly underestimated.
Water is now understood to exist in multiple phases. Beyond ice, liquid, and vapour, there is a lesser-known but critically important fourth phase: exclusion zone (EZ) water. Water and light are inseparable – water is condensed light, and light is structured through water. They are in constant communication, shaping biology at every level.
Despite its abundance, chronic dehydration or lack of water, has become a modern epidemic, contributing to inflammation, fatigue, autoimmunity, metabolic dysfunction, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, hormonal imbalance, accelerated ageing, histamine overload, poor sleep, tissue stiffness, sluggish lymphatic flow, oedema, cracked lips, leaky gut symptoms, chronic stress, impaired healing and much more. The common belief that hydration is simply about drinking more water is misleading. True hydration occurs at the cellular level influencing every biological action within our body, water must be structured, charged, and energised.
Showing the intelligence of water; I took these photo’s after using Veda Austin’s quick freeze technique with olive leaf tea I was drinking to ease gut inflammation.
The freeze shared the Olive tree in my garden from which the leaves came from! This shows water stores memory.

Humans as Solar-Powered Water Batteries
At our core, humans are solar-powered water batteries. Our energy systems are inseparable from the Sun, the Earth, and the rhythmic cycling of light and darkness. Humans perform a type of photosynthesis similar to plants – melanin (the perfect battery, our solar panels) a pigment produced by melanocytes in the skin, hair follicles, eyes iris, inner ear, brain and adrenal gland. Melanin protects against UV and gives our colour. It is a transducer which captures electromagnetic radiation (light) and uses that to split the water molecule to release energy (Ref: Melanin The Master Molecule by Arturo Solis Herrera).
Earth rotates every 24 hours, creating predictable cycles of day and night. Over millions of years, this pattern shaped the evolution of clock genes in nearly all living organisms. These genes establish our circadian rhythms, which regulate sleep, metabolism, digestion, hormone production, immune function, mood, cellular repair, and cardiovascular health.
Health does not arise from constant stimulation. It emerges from rhythmic balance aligned with nature’s cues.
This system is coordinated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in the hypothalamus – the body’s master clock. The SCN receives light information from the eyes and synchronises every organ and tissue. Every cell in the body has its own circadian clock.
In 2002, scientists discovered melanopsin, a photopigment found not only in the eyes but also in the skin. Melanopsin detects blue light and plays a critical role in circadian synchronisation. The discovery of clock genes and their molecular mechanisms earned Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash, and Michael W. Young the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
Artificial Light and Circadian Breakdown
The invention of electric light in 1879 radically altered human biology. In just 150 years, we have nearly eliminated darkness. Fluorescent lighting, introduced in 1939, and LEDs, which became dominant by 2008, transformed our light environment.
Unlike sun and moonlight, LEDs lack infrared light and contain an intense spike in blue wavelengths. In nature, blue light is never isolated – it is always balanced by red and infrared. Blue light stimulates; red and infrared heal, repair, and support mitochondrial function.
Modern indoor living has created infrared deficiency and blue light toxicity, disrupting cellular energy and structured water. Artificial lights remain static, constantly signalling “midday” to the brain. This suppresses melatonin, elevates cortisol and dopamine, raises blood sugar, and accelerates ageing.
The consequences include poor sleep, impaired cellular repair, adrenal exhaustion, metabolic disease, autoimmunity, attention disorders, and addictive behaviours. Shift workers face significantly higher risks of type 2 diabetes, while fluorescent-lit classrooms impair children’s health and concentration. High flicker rates – often invisible to the eye – further stress the autonomic nervous system.
Exclusion Zone Water: The Fourth Phase of Water
The majority of water inside the body does not behave as bulk liquid. Instead, it exists as exclusion zone (EZ) water, discovered by Dr. Gerald Pollack in 1990’s. Often called the fourth phase of water, EZ water is liquid gel like crystalline forming a honey-combed shape, highly ordered, and behaves like liquid light.
EZ water forms next to all hydrophilic surfaces – proteins, membranes, minerals, and connective tissue. It carries a negative charge, essential for cellular energy. EZ water acts as a semiconductor of electrons, generating energy when exposed to ultraviolet light and forming biological batteries throughout the body.
Nothing larger than an electron can enter the EZ, making it vital for detoxification, immune defence, blood and lymphatic flow, and cellular integrity. It also functions as a carrier of information, storing memory and transmitting signals through a liquid-crystalline network formed by water and connective tissue.
Endogenous electromagnetic fields – such as heart rate coherence between the heart, brain, and nervous system – have been shown to increase EZ order and coherence.
Why Modern Life Depletes EZ Water
Modern living systematically depletes EZ water through:
- Disrupted circadian rhythms
- Chronic environmental and emotional stress
- Lack of full-spectrum sunlight
- Artificial light at night
- Wi-Fi and non-native EMFs
- Tap water
- Glyphosate, fluoride, heavy metals and micro plastics
- Indoor lifestyles with minimal infrared exposure
- Lack of grounding
- Air travel
- Sedentary behaviour
- Surgery, anaesthesia, and scar tissue
- Mitochondrial dysfunction
Loss of EZ water drains negative charge, collapses cellular energy systems, and leads to widespread dysfunction.
Rebuilding EZ Water and Restoring Hydration Balance
Because modern life is inherently depleting, EZ support must be intentional. Gerald Pollock and his team found the best way to hydrate –
EZ Builders
Nutritional and mineral-rich supports such as- local seasonal whole foods,
as soon as you wake up and regular sipping throughout the day easing off in the evening so as not to blunt melatonin; filtered, spring, alkaline, diluted sea water, Quinton marine plasma, Sole water, Maldon salt, turmeric, tulsi tea, shilajit, healthy fats like ghee, coconut oil, and organic clarified butter help rebuild structured water.
EZ Expanders
Infrared exposure is essential. Infrared makes up nearly half of sunlight and can be accessed through natural sunlight, saunas, red light therapy, exercise, cold exposure, and physical touch, nasal breathing, drinking warm beverages and hot food. Create a vortex action by stirring the water you drink with a device or spoon and add your intention via thought, feeling or words. Grounding maintains negative charge, while UV light generates free electrons.
EZ-Rich Hydration
True hydration comes from mineralised, structured water—natural spring water, vortexed water, and properly filtered sources. Research by Masaru Emoto, Veda Austin, Fiona Gardner, and others continues to reveal water as a living, dynamic, responsive, luminous system—as water flows, we glow.
Minimise EZ Destroyers
Reducing pesticide exposure, fluoride, heavy metals (especially aluminium), anaesthesia, and excessive wireless technology protects EZ integrity.
Living in Rhythm With the Sun
Circadian rhythm begins just before sunrise. Viewing low-angle morning light—outdoors, without glasses or screens—sets the SCN and primes the hormonal cascade for the day. Artificial blue light before sunrise sends the wrong signal to the brain.
As the Sun rises, UVA light stimulates serotonin and dopamine production through the eyes and nitric oxide release through the skin, supporting mood, motivation, circulation, and blood pressure regulation.
At solar noon, UVB drives vitamin D synthesis, immune regulation, gut microbiome balance, and endorphin release. A personalised all-over solar callus (tan) protects the skin while allowing these benefits (as explored by Dr Jack Kruse).
At sunset, red and infrared wavelengths dominate, repairing photodamage, expanding EZ water, and signalling the transition from cortisol to melatonin.
After dark, blocking artificial blue light is essential. Low, warm lighting, blue-light-blocking glasses, covering the skin, reduced screen use, and a dark sleep environment allow melatonin to support autophagy, apoptosis, immune regulation, and cellular renewal.
I have found personally and professionally with in my Electrolysis practice significant favourable improvements with procedure and extending to overall health.
Consistency Over Perfection
Circadian health is built gradually and must be individualised, taking into account skin type, genetics, health status, environment, and stress load. Start by prioritising natural light before screens, reducing artificial light at night, and spending more time outdoors.
Directional accuracy matters more than perfection.
Over time, aligning with light, water, and Earth restores hydration at the cellular level – unlocking the energy, resilience, and health our biology was designed to express.
